Project Report: Warrap State Youth Peace Talk, South Sudan

Peace is life, and in Warrap State, the quest for it has never been more urgent. Our communities, particularly within the Tonj Counties, are currently enduring a period of deep instability. Recent months have seen a surge in intercommunal clashes, characterized by cycles of revenge, cattle raiding, and retaliatory violence that have resulted in tragic loss of life, displacement, and the destruction of essential local infrastructure. For the youth in these regions, who are often caught in the middle of these cycles, the daily reality is one of fear and limited opportunity. Our project, Warrap State Youth Peace Talk, is designed to interrupt this devastating pattern by providing a neutral, safe space where young people from different communities can engage in honest dialogue, share their grievances, and begin the difficult but necessary work of dismantling the structures of mistrust that fuel the conflict.

The importance of this work is highlighted by the stories of the young people we aim to reach—individuals who are weary of the violence and deeply desire a different future for themselves and their families. While we have already laid the groundwork for these forums, SSGID did not manage to mobilize the required funding during this reporting period to fully execute our planned series of peace dialogues across the Tonj region. Despite this, our resolve remains unshaken. The need to create "islands of peace" through structured, grassroots dialogue is essential to breaking the cycle of violence. By fostering communication, we are helping youth see each other as neighbors rather than adversaries, and as partners in building a more secure and prosperous South Sudan.

We are, therefore, issuing an urgent appeal to well-wishers, individual donors, foundations, and international organizations who believe that peace is the foundation of all development. From Division to Dialogue: Communities Healing Together

In the heart of Warrap State, the air is often heavy with the weight of historical grievances and the uncertainty of tomorrow. Internal conflicts and localized disputes have been on a steady rise, casting a shadow over the potential of our brightest resource: our youth.

However, thanks to your unwavering support, we recently gathered young leaders from rival communities across the state for the Warrap State Youth Peace Talk. This wasn't just a meeting; it was a lifeline.

Breaking the Cycle of Retaliation

For too long, these communities have lived under the threat of inter-communal violence, where disputes over resources often led to cycles of pain. During this project, we witnessed a profound transformation. Youth leaders who once viewed one another with suspicion sat across the table to share their shared struggles.

The most moving moment occurred when representatives from several warring communities stood together to sign a symbolic peace pact. One elder observing the talks noted, "We have been fighting over borders that we cannot eat and cattle that we cannot keep if we are dead. Today, our children are choosing to be mediators, not warriors."

Because of your generosity, these communities are now equipped with conflict-resolution skills. They have returned to their bomas (villages) not as combatants, but as Ambassadors of Peace.

The Looming Shadow: Why We Need You Now

While these community breakthroughs are a triumph, we must be honest about the reality on the ground. South Sudan is currently facing a serious, looming large-scale conflict. The tensions we see in South Sudan and Warrap State are symptoms of a larger fire that threatens to consume the progress we have made together.

The need for grassroots peacebuilding has never been more urgent. At SSGID, we are working tirelessly to de-escalate tensions, but our resources are stretched thin as more communities reach out to us for mediation support.

Peace is not a one-time event; it is a continuous effort that requires fuel. We are appealing to all well-wishers, peace-lovers, and our dedicated partners to help us keep this flame alive.

Project Report: Building Peace and Restoring Calm in Alabek Payam

A Story of Peace – From Conflict to Calm
Just a few months ago, Alabek Payam in Tonj North County was a place marked by tension and fear. Inter-communal conflict had divided neighbors, disrupted markets, and kept children out of school. Today, a different story is being written, one of peace and renewed hope, thanks to SSGID’s innovative peacebuilding efforts supported by individual contributions mobilized in Juba City.

Activities and Progress
Through its grassroots campaign, SSGID brought together youth and women in safe dialogue spaces where they could share their personal stories, identify the root causes of conflict, and design the future they wanted together. These sessions built trust, encouraged forgiveness, and strengthened community relationships. Many youth participants returned to their villages to replicate these dialogues, creating ripple effects that spread far beyond the initial gatherings.

Community Impact
The results have been remarkable. Markets have reopened, children are returning to school, and neighbors who once avoided each other are now working side by side in their fields. Violence has significantly reduced, and community leaders report an improved sense of security and cooperation among families.

Looking Ahead
This success proves that locally driven dialogue and reconciliation can bring lasting peace. SSGID is now working with community leaders to expand these peace spaces into neighboring payams, ensuring that the spirit of collaboration and nonviolence continues to grow. With sustained support from individuals, we can turn more conflict-affected communities into places of calm, unity, and opportunity.
