AAI sends relief as Mayon Volcano awakens

By Albert Santoli | Project Leader

Mayon Volcano erupting

Dear Friends of AAI,

This May, the Mayon Volcano erupted, leaving 200,000 people in the Philippines displaced or sheltered in place under layers of ash.

Asia America Initiative and our partners are preparing to send emergency food, water, tarp shelters, blankets, hygiene supplies, face masks, and basic health care items to 5,000 families.

Your donations bring hope to those affected. AAI has a legacy of more than 25 years of assisting communities across the "Ring of Fire," especially in the Philippines, which is often devastated by natural disasters such as floods and earthquakes. Your contributions have truly made a difference and have helped us save thousands of lives.

Since the Mayon Volcano became active, hundreds of earthquakes and tremors have occurred, and lava, ash, steam, and noxious gases have been emitted. Local populations are evacuating. But government services are inadequate to address the size and scope of the tragedy. To make matters worse, the rainy season has begun.

AAI is providing support to 5,000 families, or 20,000 adults and children. At present, local authorities are preventing access to the volcano's path. However, AAI and our allies are prepared and ready to take action to reach those in need.

AAI’s mission is to help build, educate, and empower local communities through a bottom-up approach. We facilitate community engagement regardless of religion. Our presence is in some of the poorest and most dangerous places for outsiders. Open communication with local communities ensures they are not forgotten and not alone. By going beyond humanitarian intervention, our network of support promotes peace and development. Our success is achieved through trust based on consistent cooperation.

If you would like to add to your support, we are gathering donations to send emergency supplies and food to affected communities in May and June. Your donations make it all possible. Thank you.

Wishing you peace,
