Fursa kwa Wasichana (Opportunities for Girls) is a podcast and community engagement initiative by Nuru Trust Network that seeks to prevent child marriage and promote girls' education in Kajiado County, Kenya. Through survivor stories, expert discussions, community dialogues, and educational resources, the project will raise awareness, challenge harmful norms, and empower families and communities to protect girls' rights, keep girls in school, and create opportunities for a brighter future.
In Kajiado County, Kenya, child marriage affects nearly 30% of girls, limiting their access to education, economic opportunities, and a safe future. Poverty, harmful cultural norms, and gender inequality continue to drive families to marry girls off at a young age. Girls, their families, and entire communities are affected as child marriage perpetuates cycles of poverty, school dropout, poor health outcomes, and reduced opportunities for women and girls.
This project will produce a 12-episode podcast series, community dialogues, educational campaigns, and advocacy activities that raise awareness about the harms of child marriage and the value of girls' education. By engaging survivors, community leaders, educators, parents, and policymakers, the project will challenge harmful norms, promote protective behaviors, strengthen reporting mechanisms, and encourage communities to keep girls in school.
Over time, the project will contribute to stronger community support for girls' education, increased reporting and prevention of child marriage, and greater awareness of girls' rights. By shifting attitudes and behaviors among families, leaders, and policymakers, the initiative aims to reduce child marriage rates, improve educational outcomes for girls, and create lasting opportunities for future generations of young women in Kajiado County.
