Project Report | Dec 19, 2016
Seeing the smiles . . . spreads the joy.

By Carol Kiger-Rice | Co Founder/Director and Project Leader

This time of year, we generally get more food donations, then any other time of year. That's because so many stores stock extra inventory of the holidays.  Our food donations increase, as does our work load. Sometimes it's rough to even keep up with all the packing and sorting!  But knowing who will be on the receiving end of this bounty, those who are scraping by day in and day out, to feed their children and family members, we carry on the work with joy.  Even with only a skeleton crew, packing and sorting massive pallet load of canned goods, huge boxes of donated boxed foods, along with the daily donations of bread, meat and other needed items, is our honor and joy.  Seeing the smiles on the faces of mothers who live in such poverty, as they choose what they may need for their kids, is a joy.  Handing out a few 'treats' such as a bear claw or muffin, to a child with no shoes, and seeing the delight in their eyes as they carry away their 'treasure', is so sweet!  Seeing the desperate conditions of a men's home for addicts, a women's home for the disabled, or a home for the elderly, and knowing the provision of soup, or day old bread, or nutritious pre-cooked meals will go a long way to keeping people healthy, is what keeps us going day in and day out.

The needs are great during the winter.  One of our Mexican ministry partners is working on building a small church structure,  so that his small congregation can get out of the rain and cold the winter months will bring. We were honored to be able to fund this structure, with our donors help, for the little congregation.

As one of our recent volunteers shared, upon joining us in Tijuana, "We journeyed into some remote little neighborhoods, to greet the hidden saints who have given their lives to serve the desperate and vulnerable.  It was a privilege and honor, to be with those who are suffering and those who serve them. It was difficult, but at the same time, I felt connection and peace. They are the poor, serving the poorest of the poor, in extreme poverty. Only thirty minutes from home, we witnessed such harsh conditions, that were troubling to see and smell.  Yet, in those places, and in our darkest hours, God’s love and care is there.  He doesn’t leave. He stays with us in the valley of the shadow of death, but doesn’t keep us from it."

We are thankful that we can walk through life with these dear friends and even the many strangers we are able to serve.  Our partnership with all those 'on this side' of the border is valued. Thank you for your caring heart! May the Christmas season bring blessings to each one who reads our Voice Of the Bride story.
