The Power To Dream

By Karen Sparacio | Project Leader

Meet Nekolina.  Her life has never been easy. Her father died when her mother was pregnant with her. There was never enough money to support the family of eight. From an early age, Nekolina worked in the garden alongside her mother and her siblings. Their hard work fed and housed the family and enabled one of her brothers to attend school.

She met her husband, Faustino, while attending an organized cultural dance. He worked in the market selling second hand clothes. They married in 1995 and moved to the Acholi Quarter where her husband was already doing business.

Together, they have ten children. In addition to being a talented artisan, Nekolina started a business two years ago selling prepared food, including cassava, sweet potatoes, and beans, from the main hub in the Acholi Quarter each evening.

In the afternoon, she works together with some of her children to prepare the meals she will sell. The business has proved very profitable for her and it also ensures that her family always has something to eat.

Nekolina would like to expand her business by growing her own vegetables. Having worked the land since she was a child, she is well versed in farming. If she were able to grow some of her own produce, she’d be able to increase her profits dramatically and also have another revenue source.

Project Have Hope has been empowering women in the Acholi Quarter for more than 16 years.  Together, we've grown stronger.  We understand that without financial security, full empowerment cannot be realized.  Through our woman sponsorship program, we provide enterprising female entrepreneurs with the tools to grow their businesses.

Like us, each of these women has dreams. They are mothers, daughters, and sisters.  By helping them to build sustainable businesses, we are giving them the power to thrive, to dream, to live their fullest lives.

Don't we all deserve that opportunity?
