Raising A Reader is turning 20 years old! That means two decades of bringing our evidence-based early childhood literacy program to the children that need it most. We could not have done it without your critical support! Thank you for your generosity!

During the 2018-2019 school year, Raising A Reader partnered with several new affiliates and launched programming at multiple new locations. New communities throughout the country are benefiting from Raising A Reader’s theory of change.

Baldwin Park, a community about 20 miles east of Los Angeles, launched the program this school year. The children and families of Baldwin Park are thrilled to now be part of the Raising A Reader community.

The Raising A Reader team is filled with gratitude in your support of our mission. Here’s to another 20 years of changing children’s lives one book at a time!

Joy of Raising A Reader

Raising A Reader is deeply grateful for your support in 2018 for our critical work of bringing our evidence-based early childhood literacy program to those children that need it most! Your gift is placing high-quality books into homes where there are none; bringing vital knowledge to parents through workshops; and providing training on how to engage families to the educators in our already under-resourced schools.

After a long work day, I opened my inbox to find that one of our schools sent an update from the teachers on their Raising A Reader experience in the classroom. I want to share this with you as it is the little moments like these that fuel us for the long-haul of ensuring that every child, from birth, is given the foundation for academic success.

"I find Raising A Reader makes a significant impact on our young readers. The texts are teeming with insightful information, the children and parents appreciate the opportunity of rotating reading material and the diversity with respect to culture that's found in the book selections. Children are excited about taking books home to read on a regular basis."

On behalf of our entire team, thank you for investing in this very important mission. With your generous gift, last year we changed 130,000 children’s lives one book at a time!

Fall is here! The weather is cooler and the leaves are changing as we say our last goodbye to summer. It’s time to curl up with a good book next to the fireplace and celebrate the joy of reading. Before you get too comfortable with your favorite book and that pumpkin spice latte let me share something with you.

We have the power to change the world with just a book. It’s that simple. The trajectory of a child’s life in poverty can be altered with access to books and empowering their parents and caregivers to be the first and most important teacher in their lives.

Few other early literacy programs operate as Raising A Reader does with national reach and proven impact. Since 1999, donors like you have helped us serve more than 1.6 million families to develop, practice and maintain home-based literacy routines that are linked to school and life success. And, we are on a mission to ensure that every child, from birth, has the same access to opportunity through literacy.

Your donation to brought education programs to young readers has impacted not only the more than 125,000 children we will have served this year, but their families, their educators, and their entire communities as our program is based on engagement through sharing high-quality books. Our books are mirrors and windows to the world that show children what is possible while instilling long-term literacy habits for their success in life.

On behalf of the future President of the United States, the ER nurse, the special education teacher, the chairwoman of the board we thank you for your passion and commitment to ensuring all children can read and pursue their dreams, whatever those may be.

As we write this report, 10 million children are transitioning to kindergarten. If current literacy proficiency trends hold, by the end of 3rd grade, 7 million will be reading below grade level. And as they mature, interventions become costlier and more ineffective. We are trying to stem this trend one child at a time.

At Raising A Reader, we await the back to school bell with great hope and anticipation. Over the summer, we have worked with our 315 partners across 37 States to ensure that they have the materials and training to successfully implement our program that rotates more than 15 million books and serves more than 120,000 children and families nationally. Back to School means that we have another year of promise and hard work ahead to bring high-quality, award-winning books to children that need them most and to empower parents to understand that they are their child's first teacher and no matter if they themselves are reluctant readers, they can help their child to succeed.

In our new kindergarten cohort this year, half live in poverty and more than 60 percent of those living in poverty don't have one book in their home. And many of these children because they haven't been exposed to books are entering kindergarten with a 30 million word deficit compared to their more affluent peers.

Thank you for your support of our children and their literacy success as they go back to school this year!

Do you remember the first book your mom shared with you? I have vivid memories of my mom sharing my favorite book about a beagle puppy named Bruno. While to many, the story was simply a day in the life of a typical dog. To me, it was a story about learning new things for the first time, meeting new friends, and going on adventures, if only as far as the backyard. What made this story so special to me was not the dog, but the snuggle time I had with my mom. She made each page come to life and I never felt so safe and full of wonder. It's amazing what mom and good book can do.

At Raising A Reader, we work tirelessly to empower moms, dads, grandparents, aunts and uncles and other important adults in a child's life to bring stories to life through shared reading. Many families we serve lack the resources and/or time to visit their local library on a regular basis, especially if they are in a single parent home, teen mom, or working full-time jobs. It is through support from donors like you that we can cycle 100 books into a home, provide families with book sharing tips, and help them develop new reading habits for years to come.

This Mother's Day, we are asking you to remember you mom and other influential women in your life who shared a story with you. Consider honoring her with a tribute donation. Your gift will not only provide books, but will give another child a special moment with their mom that will live with them forever.
