Growing Local Opportunity in Rio's Favelas

By Anny Moreira | Director of Global Partnerships

Growing Local Opportunity in Rio’s Favelas: 2026 Impact Update

Thank you for continuing to stand alongside Favela Inc. and the communities we serve in Rio de Janeiro.

Favelas are not simply places facing economic challenges, they are communities full of entrepreneurs, artists, educators, and innovators who are already creating value every day. Favela Inc. works to strengthen that potential by building the infrastructure, partnerships, and opportunities that allow local talent and businesses to thrive.

Building an Ecosystem from Within

At the center of this work is Brota, our innovation and community hub in Favela do Vidigal. What began as a coworking space has grown into a broader ecosystem connecting entrepreneurship, culture, technology, creative production, and economic development.

Today, Brota reaches 400+ people each month, supports 25+ brands, and has helped generate approximately R$40,000 in revenue for local entrepreneurs. These numbers represent more than activity, they reflect a growing network of residents gaining access to professional infrastructure, customers, collaborators, and new opportunities.

Through the Brota Coworking space, Brota Estúdio, Terra Fértil collaborative store, and cultural experiences, community members can turn ideas and skills into sustainable sources of income while remaining connected to the territory where they live.

Turning Tourism Into Community Benefit

Rio’s tourism economy continues to expand rapidly. During the first six months of 2026, the city welcomed approximately 6.4 million visitors, including 1.3 million international tourists, contributing an estimated R$17.2 billion to the local economy.

Favela Inc. is working to ensure that the growth of tourism creates meaningful opportunities for residents of the communities visitors come to experience.

Through community-based cultural experiences, visitors are introduced to local artists, entrepreneurs, and organizations, not simply as spectators, but as participants and supporters. This approach helps direct tourism spending toward the people and initiatives that make the community vibrant in the first place.

Entrepreneurship, Culture & Skills Development

Economic development at Favela Inc. extends beyond tourism.

Our programs continue to create pathways for residents to develop professional skills, launch and strengthen businesses, access markets, and participate in the creative economy. Recent initiatives have included workforce training, entrepreneurship support, creative production, community events, and opportunities for local makers to reach both Brazilian and international audiences.

One example is the continued growth of Terra Fértil, our collaborative retail space showcasing products created by entrepreneurs from Vidigal. The model gives local makers a physical point of sale while connecting them with visitors who may otherwise never discover their work. We have sold more than 530 locally produced items sold through the store, with international visitors representing an important customer base.

2026 Impact at a Glance

  • 400+ people impacted each month through Brota’s ecosystem
  • 25+ local brands supported through entrepreneurship and market-access initiatives
  • R$40,000 generated by local entrepreneurs
  • Continued growth of community-based tourism and cultural experiences
  • Expanded access to coworking, creative production, mentorship, and professional infrastructure
  • Ongoing connections between local entrepreneurs and national and international audiences

What Comes Next

The next phase of Favela Inc.’s work is about strengthening what is already growing.

We are continuing to develop Brota as a sustainable platform where community members can access resources, build businesses, express their creativity, and connect with opportunities beyond the traditional boundaries placed around favelas.

Our goal is not to create solutions for communities from the outside. It is to invest in the people, ideas, and institutions that already exist within them.

With continued support, Favela Inc. can deepen this work in Vidigal while building a model that can be adapted to other underserved communities across Brazil, demonstrating that when local talent is connected to the right resources, investment can become lasting economic opportunity.
