Vision Care for Needy Children

The KEX Kids Fund provided 124 vision vouchers to help children from July to September 2024. Children in 12 Oregon counties and 1 Washington county received crucial help in accessing comprehensive follow up eye exams (after a vision screening) with a vision care professional and if needed, support to receive new eyeglasses.

The KEX Kids Fund partners with school nurses throughout Oregon and SW Washington and the Oregon Lions Sight & Hearing Foundation (OLSHF) to administer its program for children.

OLSHF manages a statewide school screening program to identify potential vision problems. If follow up care is needed, then OLSHF works with the school nurses and the KEX Kids Fund to coordinate with our network of doctors. Families who qualify receive help with eye exams and eye glasses for their children. Nurses rely greatly on our program to ensure that children who need help receive referrals to doctors in their community. Identifying vision problems before they turn serious can ensure students reach and maintain academic success.

We partner with 127 optometrists around the state to help make vision care low cost or free for families in need.

School nurses work closely with the school vision screening program led by the Oregon Lions Sight & Hearing Foundation (OLSHF) to ensure that children who are referred for vision care receive resources such as the KEX Kids Fund.

Success story

     Majesty moved to Oregon from out of state and had just begun attending his new school.  Such transitions can be hard on a youngster, but was made even more difficult for Majesty when his glasses broke.  For a week and a half, he coped as best he could, even though it was discovered that without glasses he could barely see past a hand held in front of his face.

     Fortunately, a school counselor who knew about the KEX Kids Fund planned for Majesty to receive a new pair of glasses, completing the process in only a couple of days.  He soon looked sharp in his new, contemporary frames, more than ready to take on school and, life!
