We are the Virginia-based affiliate of FIRST, an international non-profit mentoring organization that was created to excite young people about science and technology, prepare today's students to enter tomorrow's advanced technology-based workplace, and provide them with valuable life skills. We work with our FIRST program partners to bring hands-on project-based learning programs to over 1000s children.
There is a shortage of STEM professionals. FIRST recognizes this and has developed a progression of programs to get young students as young as kindergarten and keeping them engaged through 12th grade.
This project engages students with direct hands on programs to develop the technical and non technical life skills to be successful in future academic and career efforts. Through technical and non technical mentors, students learn how things are done in the real world.
Students who particiapte in FIRST programs are more likely to go to college and graduate. There is a higher incidence of FIRST students entering career fields.
