Victims of the December storm recieved financial help thanks to generous contributions from the community to the Ventura County Community Foundation’s Storm Fund— a fund which was established in response to the lack of FEMA assistance.
The catastrophic flooding left over 400 homes severely damaged, impacting low-income families and senior citizens, many lacking insurance coverage for flood-related damages. Donations to the Storm Fund provided emergency financial assistance to those most severely impacted, as well as temporary housing, essentials like food and clothing, home restoration and more.
“People just see the fact that there are others that are struggling and they need support and they know that maybe my $20 isn’t going to make a big difference. But, you know, if 20 people come together and everybody commits $20 and then more and more, it just really adds up,” said Ventura County Community Foundation CFO Bonnie Gilles.
To date, more than $500,000 has been contributed to help our affected neighbors. We are grateful to the herculean efforts of the County of Ventura Office of Emergency Services and municipalities of Oxnard, Port Hueneme and Ventura for their diligent efforts distributing these funds to those most impacted.
City Managers for Oxnard, Ventura, and Port Hueneme will distribute the funds via pre-paid debit cards to community members who have been impacted. Each card will have between $750 to $2,000 on it.
We are grateful for the support contributed from GlobalGiving.
