As search and rescue efforts continue in the communities hardest hit by the earthquakes, Mercy Corps is working with local partners to address the most urgent needs emerging for affected families. Our partners report that access to safe shelter and accommodation is the most pressing challenge for people who have lost their homes-and it's where we are focusing our immediate response.
Across north-central communities including the capitol Caracas, families are now facing loss, injury, and uncertainty after two major quakes caused widespread devastation. At least 164 people have died and hundreds more are injured, with numbers expected to significantly climb as search efforts continue.
In Caracas, we are currently working with our local partner Superatec to provide WASH kits and safe-space supplies for 200 children from 140 families sheltering in schools, parks, and community centers after their homes were destroyed by the earthquakes.
We are also in close contact with partners in Miranda state to support early recovery efforts. We anticipate that Miranda will absorb many people displaced by this crisis, and we are positioning ourselves to support both immediate needs and longer-term recovery alongside our local partners. Mercy Corps also has longstanding partnerships within the health care system across the country that we continue to speak with and support, especially now in the face of this crisis.
