Helping Children Continue Learning After Venezuela's Earthquake

By Angela Cotte | International Cooperation Coordinator

When the double earthquake struck Venezuela, many families were left facing uncertainty as homes, schools, and essential community services suffered significant damage. For children, the disruption went beyond physical infrastructure. Schools provide safety, stability, and a sense of normalcy during times of crisis. Thanks to the generosity of supporters like you, we have been able to respond to some of the most urgent needs arising from the disaster, prioritizing child protection, educational continuity, and support for vulnerable families as they begin the long process of recovery.

One of the most important interventions supported by this project was repairing and restoring Mano Amiga Mariches School, where earthquake-related damage threatened the institution's safe operation. Through this project, US$14,734 was invested in critical repairs to ceilings, columns, displaced walls, and several classrooms, restoring safe and appropriate learning spaces for approximately 900 students across preschool, primary, and secondary levels. The school is much more than a place of learning; it serves as a vital community hub that provides educational opportunities and social support to local families. By helping restore its facilities, donors are enabling hundreds of children to continue their education in a safer environment while strengthening an essential pillar of the community.

Your support also reached Unidad Educativa Parroquial Escolanía: Niños Cantores de La Guaira, which serves 608 students, many from families facing severe socioeconomic challenges that were intensified by the earthquakes. During this emergency period, US$3,500 in project funds helped sustain the school's operations by supporting the salaries of primary school teachers, many of whom were themselves affected by the disaster. This assistance ensured that classrooms remained open, students continued receiving quality education, and children could rely on the stability, encouragement, and care that their teachers provide during difficult times.

Beyond addressing urgent needs, your generosity is helping restore dignity and stability in communities that are often overlooked by large-scale humanitarian funding. Together, these efforts have helped more than 1,500 children and adolescents maintain access to education despite the challenges created by the earthquakes. By supporting safe learning environments and ensuring the continuity of education, you are helping communities recover today while laying the foundation for a stronger and more resilient future.
