Querida Comunidad,
Somehow 2023 is already well underway, and at UWC Costa Rica we've been putting our commitment to Sustainability and Reciprocity into action. We're excited to share some of our recent highlights:
- In November, we published our 2021-2022 Impact Report, a look back on a milestone anniversary year as we celebrated our first 15 years. The report includes interactive features and highlights the launch of our Sustainability Framework, our compass for the future. Click or scan audio-visual material throughout the document to explore the #IMPACTREPORTHIGHLIGHTS, UWC Moments, and UWC Costa Rica Stories!
- Class of ‘23 student Stella was inspired by the Agents of Change camp to create the Menstruation Project, a program to provide sustainable and affordable products to students on campus. In December, Stella got to hand out sustainable menstrual products that will last her peers long after their time at UWC Costa Rica, saving thousands of kgs of waste and making our community more equitable. Stella not only demonstrated the value of our Agents of Change program, she also proved that youth have an important role to play in real-world problems and their solutions.
- Last month, students and educators participated in Community Action Week, delivering positive social impact through experiential education and sustainable community action projects in 11 diverse Costa Rican communities. By impacting lives through respect, personal contribution, reciprocity, and accountability, our community worked together to help create a more sustainable world. In the words of the class of ‘24 student Houzhi, who spent the week at CIRENAS, an organization creating transformative connections between people and the environment: “This journey has prompted innumerable thoughts and shown me yet another way in which human beings can form a bond with the natural world.” Here are some pictures!
¡Muchas gracias for your solidarity and support in helping us live our mission sustainably!
P.S. Next month, from April 3-7, is GlobalGiving’s Little by LittleCampaign. This five-day crowdfunding campaign is designed to help GlobalGiving partners, like us, cultivate a robust network of small-dollar donors. All eligible donations up to $50 will be matched at 50%, with additional incentives for new monthly donations, and funds will not run out! We will be in touch soon with more details!

Can fundraising be sustainable?

Dear Community,
At UWC Costa Rica, we know it can be. And this is how our fundraising model fits within our new Sustainability Framework:
- The Impact Fund enables our College to always put CARE for people and the planet at the center of our decisions and actions regardless of the financial cost.
- The Scholarship Fund draws together an inclusive, resilient, and DIVERSE student COMMUNITY by focusing on their potential as future agents of change regardless of their socioeconomic context.
- Every generation of UWC Costa Rica has benefited from the generosity of a community of giving. By giving forward in support of the CONTINUITY of our programs and in the spirit of RECIPROCITY for the generosity shown to them, you help us live sustainability.
- Our fundraising model is committed to driving a positive economic IMPACT by intentionally prioritizing collaborations with local and sustainable partners, practices, and materials.
- We transform fundraising and philanthropy, so they are grounded on SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC JUSTICE and are inspired by the 10 principles of Community-Centric Fundraising.
¡Muchas gracias for being part of our community of giving and helping us live Sustainability!
P.S. We would love to hear your thoughts and ideas on fundraising and sustainability! Email us at development@uwccostarica.org!
P.P.S. This year, #GivingTuesday will be next week on November 29, and our friends here at GlobalGiving are offering a $1.2 million incentive fund. The more funds we raise on November 29, the more bonus funds we'll unlock to create even more impact through our programs and shared vision for a more equitable and sustainable future.
