Children growing up in rural impoverished areas in South Africa often have tough lives, are raised by grandparents or single homes, suffer with HIV, or live on the breadline. Giving children a way to cope with their lives, and socio-economic challenges, and find a way to develop calm, concentration, and connect to their bodies in a safe peaceful space is an important tool. Yoga offers a way for children to exercise, develop, and connect to an inner calm developing happier lives.
Yoga utilises movements, and breathing to connect to your body, be self empowered to take charge of your own body, and access an inner calm. Yoga helps a child develop body awareness, builds muscle and hand eye coordination, but also teaches children to access a sense of calm and peace that they can use when their lives are difficult, or during exams, or high stress social issues.
The long term impact of engaging Rural Children in Yoga practice is to give children and the larger community of Sigagule village and surroudings the skills and tools they need to connect to their bodies, minds and spirits. Develop body confidence, and a sense of confidence in their own being, it instills an importance of health and wellness,& the ripples of acting and thinking in their yogic practice will have a ripple effect on the fabric of this rural community society & its many challenges.
