The "Uruguay against child sexual exploitation" campaign mobilized in Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay during the month of June. The historic city was chosen because of its high level both local and international tourism.
50 adolescents and adults from educational institutions in Colonia and Montevideo participated in the campaign, which was supported by the Ministry of Tourism, INAU, CONAPEES, the Municipality of Colonia, MIDES-INJU, Colonia Shopping and Fagar.
Through a series of educational and recreational activities, the campaign positions young people as central actors in the prevention of sexual exploitation, as well as the promotion of fair and caring treatment of children.
The adolescents were trained in workshops on responsible tourism, human trafficking, how to raise awareness among tourists, prevention of commercial sexual exploitation and artistic urban interventions. Teens participants acquire tools that promote behavioral changes at a personal level, strengthen leels of participation and promote transformational processes in their communities.
After the workshops, awareness actions were carried out in different public spaces of the city. Teens distributed brochures and stickers containing a commitment of fair and caring treatment towards children and adolescents, together with a description of how to report situations of child sexual exploitation.
In the coming months, the campaign will continue in different departments of Uruguay, such as Montevideo and Rocha.
