Youth raise awareness in Tourism Week

Campaign Kick Off

During Tourism Week in Uruguay, Claves is carrying out the fifth edition of the "Uruguay Against Child Sexual Exploitation" public awareness campaign in the city of Paysandú. The campaign is supported by the city government, the Ministry of Tourism, INAU and diverse non-profit organizations.

The campaign places youth at the center of the process, recognizing their ability to create change. Youth share their ideas and opinions in a safe environment where they can express their feelings and the problems they experience. Youth learn about the issue of child sexual exploitation, responsible tourism, and human trafficking. They also learn different techniques to raise awareness in their local context.

During the training process, one youth participant expressed, "Today I am free. We all have the right to be free. But many people's rights are infringed upon, and they are not free. That's why we, as youth, participate in this campaign. Because we want everyone to be free."

The week started with a kick off press conference, where youth and local government officials participated as panelists. In the words of one youth promoter panelist, "Our position is that of change and we have to make our voice be heard loud and clear".

Throughout Tourism Week, over 3,000 tourists and community members will receive information about this issue and how to report suspected cases. Youth will carry out different activities in the hot springs, Semana de la Cerveza Festival, bus terminal, and the shopping mall. They will use techniques such as Flash Mob, dance and painted faces to draw attention and then speak with the public about the campaign.
