Challenge

12 out of 14 districts within Kerala are currently impacted. The torrential rains, overflowing rivers and a series of landslides have devastated the state of Kerala. As of now more than 400 people have died and more than 2.47 lakh people have sought refuge in relief camps. Poorest of the poor are the most affected with many losing their businesses and homes. There is a shortage of food, water, and other facilities. Outburst of diseases is a major concern.

Solution

Flood waters in many parts of Kerala have started receding. The IGSSS intervention in Kerala's Wayanad district has supported more than 500 families by providing them with essential hygiene and shelter kits. Our way forward is to focus on the long-term rehabilitation and recovery of the families. We have identified three areas to work upon: shelter, livestock and livelihood options. Considering the aggravated sanitation conditions, health promotion programs will be initiated.

Long-Term Impact

Indo-Global Social Service Society (IGSSS) team is working on the ground to support 1200 people who have lost their livelihoods and shelter in the floods to rebuild their lives and lead life with dignity. We are providing health & sanitation kits, educational materials for kids, livestock support for landless and tribal families, organizing vaccination camps for livestock and building transit shelter for families who have lost their homes in the devastating floods Wayanad district Kerala, India
