URGENT: Protect Tanzania From Ebola Outbreaks

Summary

Tanzania faces an increased risk of Ebola Virus Disease through importation, WHO reported that up to 2, June, 2026 Democratic Republic of Congo has 321 and Uganda 15, confirmed cases. Border communities, travelers, and health facilities require enhanced preparedness to prevent cross-border transmission. This project aims to strengthen screening, surveillance, community awareness, and rapid response systems at high-risk border points. The intervention will focus on early detection and monitoring.

Challenge

Recent Ebola cases reported in DRC and Uganda increase the possibility of disease spread across borders. Many border crossings experience high volumes of travelers, traders, and transport workers daily.Limited screening equipment, insufficient awareness, and gaps in surveillance can delay case detection.Rural border communities may have inadequate access to health information and emergency services. Without immediate intervention, imported cases could lead to local transmission

Solution

Deploy trained health personnel at priority border entry points for screening and surveillance activities. Provide personal protective equipment (PPE), thermometers, handwashing facilities, and infection prevention supplies. Conduct community sensitization campaigns on Ebola symptoms, prevention, and reporting mechanisms. Strengthen coordination between border authorities, health facilities, and emergency response teams. Establish rapid reporting and referral systems to ensure timely management

Long-Term Impact

Improved disease surveillance systems will strengthen Tanzania's overall public health preparedness. Border communities will gain greater awareness of infectious disease prevention and response. Health workers will develop sustainable skills in outbreak detection and management. Enhanced cross-border collaboration will improve regional health security and emergency coordination. Investments made through this project will help protect lives, livelihoods, and economic stability for years to come.
