As Afghanistan continues to experience significant humanitarian and economic challenges, vulnerable families, including those returning from neighbouring countries—continue to face serious barriers to accessing essential and specialised healthcare. For many families, the cost of treatment remains an insurmountable obstacle, particularly when a child or family member requires hospitalisation, surgery, or other specialised care.
Although we have not yet received financial support through this GlobalGiving project, the French Medical Institute for Mothers and Children (FMIC) has continued its commitment to ensuring that patients are not denied essential medical care because they cannot afford it.
Sustained Impact Through FMIC's Patient Welfare Programme
Through its Patient Welfare Programme, FMIC continues to provide free or subsidised healthcare to vulnerable patients from across Afghanistan. This programme remains an important lifeline for families who have limited or no ability to pay for medical treatment.
Since 2006, FMIC has provided free or subsidised care to 921,923 patients, representing a substantial and sustained investment in improving access to healthcare for vulnerable communities.
The total value of free and subsidised healthcare provided during this period has reached approximately US$65.6 million.
These figures demonstrate FMIC's longstanding commitment to equitable access to healthcare and its capacity to reach patients who would otherwise struggle to obtain appropriate treatment.
Continuing to Respond to Vulnerability
The needs of returning Afghan families remain particularly concerning. Many families return after prolonged periods of uncertainty and displacement, often with limited financial resources and significant health needs. Children, mothers, older people, and patients with chronic or complex conditions can face particularly difficult circumstances.
While the support provided through FMIC's broader Patient Welfare Programme cannot be attributed specifically to this GlobalGiving project, it demonstrates that the systems, expertise, and commitment required to respond to these needs are already in place.
FMIC continues to assess patients based on medical need and financial vulnerability and, where possible, provides free or subsidised consultations, diagnostic services, hospitalisation, medicines, and surgical treatment.
Why Continued Support Matters
The scale of FMIC's welfare support illustrates both the depth of the need and the importance of sustained funding. More than 921,000 patients have already benefited from free or subsidised care since 2006, with US$65.6 million in healthcare support provided.
However, the demand for assistance continues to grow while the resources available to support vulnerable patients remain limited.
Dedicated contributions to the GlobalGiving project would allow FMIC to strengthen its ability to respond specifically to vulnerable returning families and help ensure that financial hardship does not prevent patients from receiving timely and potentially lifesaving treatment.
We remain grateful to the GlobalGiving community for its interest in this initiative and hope that, with continued engagement and support, we can expand our ability to provide compassionate, quality healthcare to families who need it most.
