Urgent Appeal for Disability Support

By Nicholas Ondiek | Chief Executive Officer

Dear Donor,

I hope this message finds you well.

On behalf of Asante Aid for Children and Schools in Africa, I am reaching out to share our latest report on the Urgent Intervention for Children with Disability in Kilifi. The situation is dire: many children are living with disabilities caused by snake bites and poor maternal healthcare, often linked to high illiteracy rates. These children lack walking aids, wheelchairs, and other essential equipment, leaving them excluded from school, community life, and opportunities for independence.

So far, we have received only USD 1 through GlobalGiving, which has not been enough to begin implementation. Families continue to suffer, and children remain without the support they desperately need.

Your contribution can make a direct difference:

  • USD 50 monthly educates a child with disability.
  • USD 100 buys a commode toilet chair.
  • USD 200 buys a wheelchair.
  • USD 500 adopts a child with disability, providing comprehensive support.

We invite you to read the detailed report below and consider joining us in this urgent mission. Together, we can restore dignity, mobility, and hope for Kilifi’s children.

With gratitude and hope,

Nicholas O. Ondiek

Report: Urgent Intervention for Children with Disabilities in Kilifi

Executive Summary

Kilifi County faces a growing crisis of childhood disability, driven by preventable causes such as snake bites and lack of clinic attendants during pregnancy, often linked to high illiteracy rates. Many children are left without walking aids, wheelchairs, or essential equipment, severely limiting their mobility, education, and dignity.

Despite the urgency, we have so far received only USD 1 through GlobalGiving, leaving thousands of children without the support they desperately need. This report outlines the current situation, the planned interventions, and how donors can directly transform lives through targeted contributions.

Background

  • Kilifi County has one of Kenya’s highest poverty rates (49.2%), compounding vulnerability for children with disabilities.
  • Disability prevalence is increasing due to snake bites and poor maternal healthcare access.
  • Families lack resources to provide walking aids, wheelchairs, or specialized equipment.
  • Without intervention, children remain excluded from school, community life, and opportunities for independence.

Current Status

  • Funds received: USD 1 (GlobalGiving).
  • Activities implemented: None yet, due to insufficient funding.
  • Community situation: Children continue to suffer without walking aids, wheelchairs, or essential support.

Planned Interventions

With donor support, Asante Aid will:

  1. Provide walking aids and wheelchairs to restore mobility and independence.
  2. Supply commode toilet chairs to improve hygiene and dignity.
  3. Support education for children with disabilities through monthly sponsorships.
  4. AdoptaChild Program  linking donors directly to children in need for sustained support.
  5. Community awareness campaigns to reduce stigma and promote inclusion.

Expected Impact

  • Improved mobility and independence for children with disabilities.
  • Increased school attendance and educational opportunities.
  • Enhanced hygiene and dignity through the provision of specialized equipment.
  • Reduced stigma and greater community inclusion.
  • Longterm empowerment of families and children.
