On August 26, 2026, a devastating flash flood struck Nepal's Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river corridors, affecting several communities. The flood originated upstream of the Nepal-China border due to a glacial collapse, and rapidly swept through settlements, causing significant loss of life, widespread displacement and severe damage to homes, infrastructure and livelihoods. ActionAid has been operational in Nepal since 1982 and is working alongside trusted local partners on rapid emergency response.
At least 317,000 people have been affected and 40,000 displaced by the floods. Preliminary reports indicate that hundreds of people have been killed, and many more reported missing (with figures expected to rise). Entire communities have suffered extensive destruction, with homes, markets, bridges, roads, communication systems and public infrastructure being washed away or severely damaged.
ActionAid Nepal is coordinating closely with government authorities, humanitarian organizations, local partners, and community networks to support a timely and locally led response. Planned actions include: Conducting rapid needs assessments, providing emergency food/water, essential items, and temporary shelter assistance to the most vulnerable groups, including women-headed households, children, older people, and persons with disabilities.
ActionAid will continue working through local partners, volunteers, and community networks to reach affected communities, including in areas where access remains constrained. We will be participating in government and humanitarian coordination mechanisms to ensure assistance is coordinated and complements the wider response. In the long-term, continued flood and landslide risks require strengthened early warning, evacuation support, resilience building, & preparedness for downstream communities.
