This project will upskill and increase the competencies of 500 teachers in 30 nursery, primary and secondary schools through in-service workshops in South Sudan's Juba and Yei counties between January and December 2025. The program will cover critical topics that address pedagogical practices, classroom management, code of conduct, teacher-parent relationships, learner assessment, mental health for educators, psychological wellbeing in the workplace, scheme of work and lesson plan development.
According to the 2021 Education Census Report, 26 per cent of schools across the country are non-operational due to a lack of teachers. At the same time, the high pupil-qualified teacher ratio (PQTR) of 86:1 in primary schools compromises the ability to provide quality education. The difficulty in finding qualified teachers has led to the recruitment of volunteer teachers, which has impacted student learning, with more than 94 per cent of learners unable to read a simple text by the age of 10.
The project supports 500 in-service teachers to improve by conducting one to three-day workshops and lesson observation at the 30 targeted schools on topics like innovative teaching methods, mental health for educators, scheme of work and lesson plan preparation, classroom management, and teacher-parent relationships. The beneficiaries will include teachers from nursery, primary and secondary schools, administrators, and indirectly learners who will benefit from improved teaching practices.
The project workshops that employ the learn by doing model will lead to improved teaching methodologies and confidence for the 500 beneficiary teachers in the thirty (30) targeted schools in Juba and Yei River counties by the end of 2025. The teachers will be connected in a WhatsApp group to increase collaboration among themselves to share useful resources and opportunities, hence better classroom management, learning outcomes and parent-teacher relationships at the end of the project period.
