Kampong Cham is a small but bustling town around 3 hours from the capital city of Phnom Penh. Limited access to education, healthcare and awareness of gender inequality, the community have a lack of support in utilizing their potential to achieve their aspirations and goals. The GVI Trust has united with multiple local partners to provide vital education, raise awareness about preventable diseases, increase opportunity for local women & fund scholarships to train local community members.
Away from the capital city, access to education, healthcare & employment for women become challenging. Without an education-specifically in a basic understanding of English-students are unable to enter skilled employment or further education. With no access to affordable medical care, awareness of healthcare issues and treatment are not possible for many. Finally, with a community working within traditional gender norms, women are less able to achieve their potential and reach their aspirations.
By providing regular classes, workshops and trainings we work with the local community to improve education, access to healthcare, aspirations for women and, ultimately, to improve the socio-economic standing of the community of Kampong Cham.
The long-term vision for Kampong Cham comes from extensive research into the needs and wants of the community. From this we have created long term objectives. Ultimately, we aim to improve community members' access, awareness and understanding of English, healthcare and gender equality. Moreover, we would like to create independent and autonomous local people who are self-sustainable and able to achieve their goals.
