Uplifting Marginalized Girls in the DRC

By AHADI | CORDINATOR

Across the Democratic Republic of the Congo, too many girls reach adolescence only to see their opportunities disappear. In conflict-affected communities, particularly in North Kivu, South Kivu, and Ituri, poverty, displacement, violence, child marriage, and deeply rooted gender inequalities make it extremely difficult for marginalized girls to remain in school and build a safe and independent future. Around Goma, displaced girls living in overcrowded and vulnerable conditions may face impossible choices simply to meet basic needs. Uplifting Marginalized Girls in the DRC was designed to respond to these interconnected challenges through an integrated approach combining secondary education, protection from gender-based violence, and economic empowerment. Rather than addressing one problem at a time, the project seeks to build a stronger safety net around girls so that poverty does not force them out of school or into harmful survival strategies.

During the preparation phase, our organization has focused on mobilizing resources and identifying qualified trainers and potential learners who will participate in the project activities. The project was scheduled to begin in November 2025, with implementation centered on practical education, protection, life skills, and livelihood opportunities. With a total funding target of US$65,000, we recognize that significant resources are still needed. At the reporting stage described here, US$0 had yet been raised, and no activities that depend on future funding are presented as completed. Our collaboration with GlobalGiving represents an important opportunity to reach a wider community of international donors and partners who believe that girls should have the opportunity to learn, live safely, and become economically independent. Every contribution can help us move from preparation to implementation and reach girls who are often among the first to be left behind.

The impact we are seeking goes beyond individual beneficiaries. By helping marginalized girls stay in education, strengthening their protection, and creating pathways toward economic independence, the project aims to contribute to breaking the intergenerational cycle of poverty, strengthening human capital, reducing vulnerability to gender-based violence and child marriage, and supporting stronger communities and future women leaders. We warmly thank GlobalGiving for opening a door to a broader community of supporters, and we sincerely thank every donor who chooses to stand with girls in the DRC. We invite individuals, foundations, companies, and international partners to join us in this effort. With your support, a girl who today faces exclusion can have the chance to return to learning, develop skills, earn a dignified livelihood, and become an active force for positive change in her family and community. Together, we can turn an urgent protection crisis into an opportunity for lasting change.
