Upgrade a remote Maasai business hub in Tanzania

Dear Friends,

Thank you for your continued support of the Ormoti Solar Business Hub. Your generosity is helping to provide clean water and essential services to more than 300 Maasai villagers living in this remote part of northern Tanzania.

Following the rainy season, activity at the hub has begun to increase once again as families return to using the borehole as their primary source of clean water. As seasonal surface water disappears, the solar-powered borehole once again becomes an essential lifeline, providing safe water for drinking, cooking, washing and livestock.

Over the past few months, we have continued planning the next phase of improvements to help the hub better meet the needs of the surrounding community. Our priority remains improving the reliability of both the water system and the business services that operate alongside it. Planned upgrades include repairing the booster pump and distribution pipework to improve water access, replacing the ageing motor on the maize mill to reduce breakdowns and developing additional services that generate income while meeting local needs.

One exciting opportunity we continue to explore is the addition of milk cooling facilities. Bringing milk collection closer to Ormoti would make it much easier for Maasai women to sell their milk to the nearby dairy enterprise, reducing long journeys on foot while creating additional household income. At the same time, we hope to expand veterinary services so livestock owners can access animal healthcare and medicines without travelling to neighbouring villages.

These improvements are about much more than infrastructure. By combining clean water with reliable community services, the business hub is becoming a centre for economic activity where local people can access essential services, support their livelihoods and spend less time travelling. Every hour saved collecting water, milling maize or accessing veterinary care is time that can instead be invested in education, family life or income-generating activities.

Fundraising has remained slower than we would like, meaning these planned upgrades have not yet been completed. However, the need for them continues to grow, and we remain committed to working alongside the community to make them a reality.

Every donation helps move us one step closer to a stronger, more resilient business hub that provides reliable water, supports local enterprise and improves quality of life for hundreds of Maasai families.
