Maisha by Nisria - Where Fashion Meets Empowerment

By Nur M'nasria | Founder and CEO - Nisria

Imagine a world where discarded fabrics become pathways to independence, where creativity sparks new beginnings, and where fashion serves as a powerful catalyst for profound social change. This is the inspiring vision brought to life by Maisha by Nisria, a non-profit fashion and design studio nestled in Nakuru, Kenya. Our core mission is to redefine fashion as a force for empowerment, specializing in crafting authentic, handmade garments from ethically repurposed materials. This approach champions a sustainable and conscious engagement with fashion, while simultaneously addressing pressing societal challenges.

Kenya grapples with a significant surplus of textile waste, much of which is plastic-based and degrades into polluting particles, alongside persistent poverty and inequality. Maisha by Nisria directly confronts these dual issues by transforming discarded materials into unique designs, thereby fostering positive change. By doing so, we equip vulnerable individuals with invaluable skills in fashion and design, enabling them to build sustainable livelihoods and embark on paths to independence.

Our Transformative Empowerment Program: The Maisha program is more than just a studio; it is a vibrant space where creativity, community, and opportunity converge. We offer a robust vocational training program that provides free sewing, fashion design, and entrepreneurship courses. We are incredibly proud to announce our current mission to train 100 participants over the next one and a half years over three cohorts between May 2025 and November 2026with a particular focus on empowering young women/mothers, single mothers, refugees, and persons with disabilities who are currently enrolled in our program.

Our comprehensive training is thoughtfully structured into two distinct sessions:

  • short-term course that covers foundational and accessible skills such as cross-stitching, embroidery, and crocheting.
  • longer-term program, spanning six months, that delves into more in-depth tailoring, advanced upcycling techniques, and essential basic business knowledge and skills. This holistic approach is designed to provide participants with practical skills, economic opportunities, and a deeply supportive creative community.

Beyond technical instruction, our entrepreneurship incubator program provides vital mentorship, resources, and micro-funding to Maisha graduates who aspire to launch their own fashion businesses.

Demonstrated Impact and Achievements: In the past year, Maisha by Nisria has made significant, tangible strides, reflecting our unwavering commitment to creating lasting change:

  • 6 students successfully enrolled in the Maisha by Nisria vocational training program.
  • More recently, the Maisha Training Program successfully trained 6 individuals in high-end upcycling, celebrating their progress with graduation ceremonies.
  • 20 women mastered embroidery workshops, with 10 of them contributing their skills to our exquisite Afropia Collection.
  • We created an impressive 310 handcrafted pieces across our diverse collections, including HAYAT, KIPENZI, and AFROPIA, utilizing 155 kg of repurposed textiles.
  • Our reach has expanded globally through key partnerships with organizations such as SHIFT 80, thenilelot, Movenpick Nairobi, Hilton Dubai, and The Earth Weavers, extending our impact across Kenya, Sudan, Lebanon, and Japan.
  • Maisha has been proudly featured at prominent global showcases, including Nairobi Design Week, Nairobi Fashion Week, Miza Abu Dhabi, and Contraband Events Dubai.

Current Campaign and Future Vision: Our active campaign has a total goal of $15,000, with $14,609 remaining to achieve our fundraising target. This vital support helps us sustain and expand our life-changing initiatives.

Ultimately, every purchase from Maisha by Nisria directly supports community development and education initiatives, and sales from the project will serve as a sustainable revenue stream for other Nisria programs benefiting low-income and vulnerable women and children. By investing in Maisha, you are not just supporting fashion; you are empowering possibilities and weaving a brighter future for individuals and communities.
