Disability is not inability

By Dancan Okaka | Director

Dear GlobalGiving Supporters,

We are pleased to present our progress update on the “Supporting Girls & Women with Disabilities” project. This initiative continues to address barriers faced by women and girls with disabilities while promoting inclusion, dignity, and opportunity.

1. Activities This Period

Awareness Campaigns & Advocacy:

Held 5 community forums in Kibera and Kajiado to raise awareness about disability rights.

Trained 30 community health volunteers on inclusive practices.

Accessibility Support:

Provided mobility aids (wheelchairs and walking frames) to 8 women.

Supported 3 girls with visual impairments with audio learning devices.

Skills Development & Empowerment:

Conducted a 6-week vocational skills training (tailoring & crafts) for 20 women.

Launched mentorship circles with successful women living with disabilities.

Menstrual Health & Hygiene:

Distributed dignity kits (sanitary pads, soap, undergarments) to 40 girls and young women.

Held 2 sessions on menstrual health education and self-esteem building.

2. Impact Achieved

Improved mobility and independence for 11 beneficiaries

Increased school attendance for 5 girls living with disabilities

Boosted confidence and economic potential for 20 women in vocational training

Shifted attitudes in the community around disability and inclusion

3. Beneficiary Highlight

Joyce, a 17-year-old girl with a hearing disability, is now attending school regularly after receiving a communication aid and school supplies. She says:
"I feel seen and supported. I want to become a teacher and help others like me."

Her story is a testimony to the impact your support brings.

4. Challenges

Transportation remains a barrier for girls living far from service points

Limited specialized therapists and counselors in the community

5. Next Steps

Expand services to reach rural areas through mobile clinics

Strengthen partnerships with disability-inclusive schools

Launch a digital campaign amplifying voices of women with disabilities

Thank You

Your support helps us remove barriers and build bridges of opportunity. Together, we are shaping a more inclusive, respectful world for girls and women with disabilities.
