Unite efforts against cancer and save lives

At the end of 2016, the Swiss Cancer Research foundation (SCR) celebrated its 25th anniversary. In 1991, SCR raised three million Swiss francs for research funding. A quarter of a century later this amount has increased more than fivefold. However, an annually growing number of research projects accompanied this steady increase in money raised. Initially, we received 50 projects each year. Today, researchers submit around 200 cancer research projects amounting to a requested total of 50 to 60 million Swiss francs per year to the SCR and its partner organization the Swiss Cancer League. Unfortunately, as financial means are limited, only one third of these projects can be supported. For this reason, it is highly important to carefully evaluate and select the most outstanding projects. To this end, the SCR relies on the expertise of a scientific committee working in close collaboration with international experts in cancer research.

In the past 25 years SCR supported nearly 1000 cancer research projects with almost 200 million Swiss francs. Also in the future, we will put all our effort into promoting the most promising cancer research projects.

We are pleased to inform you that this year the Swiss Cancer Research foundation supported by the ACCENTUS Foundation (Marlies Engeler Fund)has launcheda new research program on “Health Services Research in Oncology and Cancer Care”.

In addition to basic and clinical research, health services research is considered the “third pillar” of biomedical research. “It examines how people get access to health care, how much care costs, and what happens to patients as a result of this care. The main goals are to identify the most effective ways to organize, manage, finance, and deliver high quality care; reduce medical errors; and improve patient safety” (definition according to the US Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality).

The program is scheduled to run over a period of at least five years. We hope to support as many high-quality health services research projects as possible in order to improve the quality of care and the quality of life for cancer patients at all levels of cancer care provision.

By the deadline of 15 September 2016, 44 highly interesting projects were received. Unfortunately only up to a fifth of these can be supported. Help us support a larger number of innovative projects by donating to the Swiss Cancer Research foundation today!

To take advantage of our body’s inherent capability to attack and fight tumor cells, a basic understanding of the crosstalk between tumor cells and immune cells is necessary.

In response to this year’s first call for research projects, the Swiss Cancer Research foundation received 45 high-quality basic and clinical cancer research projects. One third of these research projects specifically focuses on tumor immunology and aims to identify new targets for intervention or improve current cancer immunotherapies.

Among these projects are novel drug-development approaches that utilize a variety of immunomodulatory agents, such as antibodies, bi-specific molecules, peptides and cell-based therapies. The potential of these novel agents will be investigated in pre-clinical models of multiple cancer types, including leukemia, brain tumors, melanoma and others. Results obtained in these studies may lay the groundwork for future clinical trials.

All these research projects reflect the breadth of opportunities immunotherapies offer in the treatment of cancer. However, as in the past, several authoritative research projects could not be realized due to insufficient financial resources. In the interest of patients and their loved ones, we therefore hope we can rely on your continued support to advance cancer research even faster.

Thank you.
