Dear Friend,
When disaster strikes, children are often the hardest hit. Thanks to supporters like you, UNICEF is there to help them stay healthy, educated, protected and respected. Here's a closer look at UNICEF's work for children in three countries facing ongoing emergencies.
Afghanistan: Children in Afghanistan are facing severe and overlapping crises, including malnutrition and food insecurity, flash floods, large-scale returns from neighboring countries and disease outbreaks. In August, UNICEF helped 6.6 million people get essential health care across all 34 provinces. UNICEF also provided 149,476 people with safe drinking water and 135,164 people with basic sanitation services.
Venezuela: Months after the June 24 earthquakes, many families are still living in temporary camps, and some children are facing delays in returning to school. UNICEF is helping families move from emergency relief toward recovery. To date, UNICEF and partners have reached 42,265 people with primary health care, 17,391 people with safe water and 14,644 people with psychosocial support.
Nepal: The flash floods that struck Nepal on August 26 affected an estimated 84,270 people, including 32,021 children, across 17 municipalities in six districts. In response, UNICEF built 70 temporary toilets and restored four water systems in temporary shelters, providing safe water for 2,300 people. Mental health and psychosocial support services have reached 9,711 people, and 20 child-friendly spaces have given 887 children a safe place for structured play. UNICEF also screened 1,702 children for acute malnutrition and helped reunite 24 children with their families. To keep children learning, 48 temporary learning centers were set up for more than 1,400 children, and education supplies reached more than 2,700 children.
Your generosity makes it possible for UNICEF to reach children before, during and after emergencies with critical assistance, protection and hope. Thank you!
