Summary

Mozambique's coastline supports extraordinary marine life, including whale sharks, manta rays, dolphins, turtles, humpback whales and coral reefs. These face growing threats from overfishing, pollution and climate change. At our Marine Research Centre in Tofo, we monitor marine wildlife and ecosystems to better understand and protect this remarkable marine environment. We are raising funds for underwater cameras and acoustic equipment to improve research and strengthen conservation efforts.

Challenge

Tofo's waters support exceptional marine life, from whale sharks and manta rays to fragile coral reefs. Protecting them requires long-term monitoring to understand where species go, how populations are changing and how human activity affects them. Our Marine Research Centre has built valuable datasets, but reliable underwater equipment is costly and difficult to source. Without it, vital opportunities to track and understand marine life can be lost.

Solution

By acquiring this equipment, we can strengthen research on marine megafauna and answer important questions about their populations, movements and behaviour. Underwater cameras will contribute to global photo-identification databases, help track movement patterns and allow us to monitor cleaning stations without the disturbance or bias caused by divers. The acoustic recorder will also enable us to explore new research methods and study whale songs and other underwater sounds.

Long-Term Impact

Your support will help protect some of Mozambique's most iconic marine animals, including whale sharks, rays, turtles, dolphins and whales. By strengthening long-term monitoring, this equipment will help us understand where these animals go, which habitats they depend on and what threats they face. The evidence we collect can support better fisheries management, reef protection, responsible tourism and stronger conservation measures, helping ensure these remarkable species have a safer future.
