Summary

In March 2023, Uganda enacted legislation that severely affected vulnerable and marginalized communities. Since then, we have received over 159 requests for support from individuals facing arrests, evictions, violence, and other human rights abuses. Many have also lost access to healthcare, food, and livelihoods due to stigma, discrimination, and exclusion.

Challenge

Following the enactment of restrictive legislation in 2023, threats to the safety of vulnerable communities have intensified, including arrests, violence, and widespread discrimination. Many people now face family rejection, denial of healthcare, police brutality, and other human rights violations. This project will support individuals to relocate to safe spaces and enable trained paralegals to respond promptly to life threatening emergencies and human rights abuses.

Solution

We will promote equality, provide safe shelter, nutrition, healthcare, and respond to human rights violations affecting people at risk of violence. The project will also support emergency relocation to safer areas, temporary accommodation, legal representation, medical care, bail assistance, and mental health and psychosocial support for individuals in crisis.

Long-Term Impact

The Mbarara RISE Foundation provides assistance and information on safety, security, and equal human rights for marginalized communities in Uganda. We continue to advocate against laws that restrict personal freedoms and undermine equality.
