This project will help 4 health centres in Wakiso District in Uganda deal with the coronavirus pandemic through providing handwashing facilities, PPE and spreading effective hygiene messaging. We will also carry out a campaign of hygiene awareness in the surrounding rural villages through house to house trainings. With your support we can reach 130,000 people and reduce the spread of Covid-19 and dramatically improve people's long term health through better hygiene practices.
Handwashing with soap is the first line of defence against the spread of infectious diseases like COVID 19. Poor water and sanitation facilities, difficulties enforcing social distancing and lack of good hygiene knowledge and understanding of COVID -19 could be catastrophic in Uganda especially for those in poor rural communities with limited access to health care and education
We will provide handwashing facilities and soap at the gates of 4 large health centres in Wakiso District and at strategic points throughout the centres so that everyone can wash their hands regularly. We will play recorded hygiene and C-19 related messages on a loop by the main gates as people wash their hands to enter and we will provide the staff with vital PPE. We will also deliver community outreach to the surrounding villages through house to house hygiene training reaching 130,000 people
Health centres will reduce the spread of coronavirus and more people will understand how to avoid catching and prevent spreading it further. Good hygiene behaviours such as handwashing will carry on into the future having become habit and because people will understand the link between health and hygiene. 80% of all infectious diseases are transmitted by touch and washing hands with soap and water reduces diarrhoeal disease associated deaths by 50%
