“This has been a golden opportunity not only for me but for the entire community!” says Elizabeth, a young mother who attended ICT training at Bugiri Public Library in Uganda. She is now using her new ICT skills to run a small stationery shop in Bugiri Town.
Your support makes it possible for us to provide Pocket WiFi Routers and internet data packages to public and community libraries across Uganda, to help them to offer and sustain free ICT training in their communities. Through our project, 20 local libraries have trained over 6,000 people to use computers and the internet since early 2021. Guided by librarians, about 900 people, mostly women and unemployed youths, have found and completed useful online courses.
Herbert learnt basic ICT skills at Kawempe Youth Centre and Community Library in Kampala. “Even after the end of class, I would stay in the library watching YouTube tutorials about computer systems and software management and installation. After graduation from the library’s training course, I applied for a management of computer software position in one of our nearby schools, and managed to get a contract for two years. I am now earning a living.”
Anna, a single mother, was selling bananas to support her three children, and dreamed of expanding her business. At Mummy Foundation Community Library in Kampala Stellah learnt mobile literacy skills. She is now recording income and expenses on her smartphone and reaching out to new customers via WhatsApp and Facebook.
“I took part in a women’s group that the library has been training on mobile literacy. After the training I was able to use my smartphone to create a WhatsApp group which has more than 10 women, and we use it to discuss and plan various community initiatives aimed at empowerment of local women,” said Edith, a trainee of Uganda Development Services Community Library in Kamuli town.
We have many stories like these. Thank you for helping local libraries to change people’s lives.
