Udayan Ghar - Sunshine Homes were set up to ensure children without parental care do not remain 'nobody's children'. We firmly believe that a loving family and home are rightful privileges for every child. Udayan Ghar was set up under a Living In Family Environment (L.I.F.E.) model, in which lifelong volunteer mentors and caregivers provide all-around support, including education, health, life skills, and counselling. 2500+ children have grown up in 11 homes, in 4 states of India since 1996.
In India, 29.6 million children live without parental care, that is, they lack the oversight of at least one of their parents. These children, who have been temporarily or permanently separated from their biological families, need protection in the form of quality alternative care. The grave reality is that only 1.5% receive any sort of formal alternative care. Programs entailing child-centric family-strengthening measures or community-based care for such children are almost non-existent.
We ensure children without parental care get a home that incorporates foster families and institutions. Mentors voluntarily nurture these children to a self-reliant life. Our mental health program ensures children overcome their traumatized pasts. Each home consists of 12-15 children, located in middle-class neighborhoods, where the community takes ownership of them; they can re-integrate themselves into society. Children study in good schools and receive life skills training from mentors.
Udayan Ghar program has grown from 1 home with 3 children to 13 sunshine homes, housing 200 children in Delhi NCR, Rajasthan, and Haryana. 2260 children have been nurtured by 36 mentor parents who have signed up as lifelong volunteers. Many of our children have gone to study overseas and in good universities in India. They have established strong family units of their own.
