Small Group Workshop on Empowering the Mind

The Udayan Shalini Fellowship (USF) program of Udayan Care is a unique initiative aimed at academic excellence and personality development for deserving and talented girls from weak socio-economic backgrounds, transforming them into empowered and dignified women, or Shalinis. Unlike a usual scholarship program, USF goes beyond supporting higher education and providing regular mentoring, leadership development, and inculcating a sense of social responsibility. Udayan Care initiated the USF program in 2002 in Delhi, initially supporting 72 girls. Since its inception, USF has provided assistance to over 14,500 girl beneficiaries from financially constrained backgrounds. Currently, USF operates in 34 chapters across 13 states in India, significantly expanding its reach and impact.

In the past three months, the Shalinis have actively engaged in in-person and virtual sessions and events organized by USF, fostering academic and extracurricular growth. Face-to-face mentor interactions and workshop participation have created a sense of togetherness among Shalinis. The program consistently supports Shalinis and their families, guiding them in skill development and preparation for professional life. These workshops covered topics such as Positive Language, Career Awareness, and Communication, equipping Shalinis to pass on their knowledge. Additionally, visits to various companies and institutions offered practical exposure to the corporate world.

New mentors, including dedicated alumnae, join the program, further enhancing the mentoring process. Donors and partners have played a crucial role in supporting the Shalinis, and their continued assistance is vital for advancing girls' education and expanding outreach. GlobalGiving has been a significant supporter of the USF program.

Success Story

Name of Shalini: Komal (Name changed)

Batch: 18

Chapter: North Delhi

Komal is currently preparing for the Chartered Accountancy (CA) exams. She recently cleared her foundation level exams and is rigorously preparing for the further levels.

Komal’s journey with the Udayan Shalini Fellowship (USF) began when she passed the entrance exam, followed by a selection interview. This marked the start of her enriching experience with the fellowship. The support from USF was instrumental in her decision to pursue the Chartered Accountancy (CA) course. The monetary and mentorship support provided by the fellowship helped her simultaneously manage and focus on both her graduation and CA studies.

Komal attended every capacity-building session at Udayan Care with great enthusiasm. Each session motivated her further, helping her to clarify her career path. Her involvement with USF extended beyond just sessions; she participated in the induction process and regularly attended various workshops, gaining valuable insights, career guidance, and soft skills.

Currently, Komal is effectively balancing her job and studies. She works as a Hostel Warden at Fortis Hospital's Hostel, earning a monthly salary of 20,000. Her job provides the flexibility she needs to continue her studies without stress.

Komal considers the USF program a true blessing, especially given her family's financial instability. Despite the monetary challenges, the support from USF has been a constant source of strength, helping her to soar. She even secured her current job with the assistance of a senior Shalini. Komal's goal is to complete her CA and become an inspiration to others. Her journey is a testament to the transformative power of the Udayan Shalini Fellowship.

Komal’s story showcases her resilience, determination, and the profound impact of the USF program in helping her overcome obstacles and achieve her dreams.
