Support Girls' Education in India

Udayan Shalini Fellowship program (USF) of Udayan Care is a unique academic excellence and personality development program for deserving and talented girls from weak socio-economic backgrounds aiming to turn them into empowered and dignified women or Shalinis. It is unique because it goes beyond being a usual scholarship program by not only supporting higher education but also providing regular mentoring and leadership development and inculcating a sense of social responsibility in them.

  • Four Employability sessions on Email Writing, Using the Internet for Jobs, Assertiveness, and Non-Verbal Communication.
  • Eight Small group sessions on Job opportunities, self-esteem, Menstrual Hygiene, Interview Readiness – Genpact, Staying Positive by Deloitte, Self-Motivation, Career Guidance, and Personal Hygiene.

MAY 2023

Mandatory Workshops

 

  1. Employability

A session on Email Writing was conducted by Ms. D Jain on 7th May 2023 with third-year Shalinis. Where Shalinis got to know about the basics of email writing for professional use.

A session on Using the Internet for jobs was conducted by Ms. S Farheen with 2nd-year Shalinis on 28th May 2023. The session helped Shalinis to understand the best use of the internet for finding a job and they also got familiar with the different platforms for Jobs.

 

  1. Small Group/Monthly

A small group session on Job opportunities was conducted by Ms. A Sharma with third-year Shalinis on 21st May 2023. The session helped Shalinis to understand the different kinds of job opportunities just after graduation.

 

The second session was conducted on Self Esteem with 12th and First Year Shalinis on 21st May 2023 by Mr. K Pareek (TATA Proengage Volunteer). The session helped girls to understand their importance and how to value themselves.

 

The third session was conducted on Interview Readiness by Genpact Team on 26th May 2023. The session helped them to learn different techniques to manage an interview. There was a mock interview conducted for a better understanding of Shalinis.

 

 

The fourth session was conducted on Menstrual Hygiene by Ms. N on 28th May with 2nd-year Shalinis and it includes awareness regarding menstrual hygiene and also if they are facing any issues.

 

  1. Quarterly Workshop

A session on Decision Making was conducted by Team Deloitte on 12th May 2023 (Virtually) where Shalinis from all the batches participated. The session included the important steps of decision-making and how to take effective decisions in life.

 

  1. Mentor-mentee meeting

3 Mentor Mentee meeting was conducted for Shalinis and their mentors and mentor didis on the 7th, 21st, and 28th of May 2023. Where all the Shalinis met with their respective mentors. They discussed their course options after 12th, job opportunities, how to manage the stress of exams, and many more topics related to their education and life. 

 

 

Additional Activities

 

  1. Celebrating Special days for a Social Cause

Menstrual Hygiene Day Celebration on 28th May 2023, where Shalinis have raised awareness on menstrual hygiene among their peer and friends.

 

  1. Alumnae Cell Meeting – 21st May 2023

A Meeting with North Delhi Alumnae cell was conducted with the new cell members. The aim of the meeting was to develop active engagement of Alumna at the USF program. In the meeting, there was a major discussion on the frequency of the meeting and what activities can be done to make alumna engaged.

 

  1. Participation in external activities/webinars/seminars/walks/rallies etc.

Every year DUKE University conducts a Mental Health research study with Udayan Ghar children and USF North Delhi Shalinis. Where 36 Shalinis from 1st Year taking part. This year firstly they took a session with Shalinis to share last year’s research outcomes and recommendations and why they are conducting interviews this year. After the session, they conducted in-depth interviews with 7 Shalinis on 28th May 2023 at Mahavir School. The rest of the interviews are happening online. 

 

JUNE 2023

Mandatory Workshops

 

  1. Small Group Workshops / Monthly

A session on Positive thinking was organized by Deloitte Team on 18th June 2023. Where 52 shalinis out of 60 have participated. Shalinis have learned about the importance of positive thinking and learned the tricks of staying positive. There were many activities and role plays conducted for a better understanding of Shalinis.

 

  1. Mentor-mentee meeting

One Mentor Mentee meeting was conducted for Shalinis and their mentors and mentor didis on the 18th of June 2023. Where all the Shalinis met with their respective mentors. They discussed their career options, job opportunities, how to do time management, and many more topics related to their education and life.

 

Additional Activities

 

  1. Exposure Visit / Residential Camp

The USF North Delhi Chapter successfully organized a six-day residential camp at Shri Aurobindo Ashram, Delhi Branch. The camp was held from 5th June to 11th June and was divided into two parts, with each part spanning three days. Each day comprised a variety of sessions and activities aimed at personal growth and development.

The camp included sessions on Personal Space, Presenting Self, Professional Etiquette, Team Building, Mental Health and Well Being, and Theater techniques. These sessions provided valuable insights and skills to the participants, equipping them with the tools necessary for personal and professional success. The diverse range of topics covered ensured a well-rounded learning experience for all.

JULY 2023

Mandatory Workshops

 

  1. Employability

A session on Assertiveness was conducted by Ms. N with college first-year Shalinis, where 60 out of 70 girls have joined. Shalinis learned about assertive behavior and why it is important and how to be assertive.

Another session was organized on Non-Verbal Communication by Ms. Dimpika Pawar where 65 out of 72 Shalinis joined the session. They learned how Non-verbal communication is also one of the important skills.

 

  1. Small group/monthly

Two small groups session was conducted by MFK, Associate Director USF with Class 12th and College first-year Shalinis, Where guided first-year girls to take admission in different courses. And for class 12th, he guided them to stay motivated and positive and also suggested them to deal with different situations with family and friends.

 

A session on Personal Hygiene was conducted by Ms. N Shah on 14th July 2023 with class 12th Shalinis, where she shared the importance of personal hygiene and also guided Shalinis for their personal care.

 

  1. Mentor-mentee meeting

Mentor mentee meet was conducted for all four batches where some meetings took place online and other was physical. Where mentors guided girls in their college admissions, enhancing their skills, and improving their communications.

 

  1. Giving back to the society (social work hours)

Shalinis are regularly teaching their neighborhood children, participating in the school societies and NSS at colleges, they are also participating with different organizations, doing awareness on the individual level, feeding animals, and helping nearby people.

 

  1. Selection Process

The selection process FY 2023 -24 has started in North Delhi Chapter, we will be inducting Batch 22. We have started with the first step of the Selection process which is collecting application forms and for that, our volunteers (Existing Shalinis/ Alumnae) are visiting schools and guiding new applicants for filling up the form.

Financial Condition and Family Background – She has a total of four members in her family, her father is a daily wager (delivery boy at a Jewelry shop) and earns Rs. 15000/- per month. Her younger brother is in school.

 

Previous State – She had the desire to clear her NEET from the beginning but there was a lack of guidance and support, she attempted right after her class 12th last year but she could not make it. But after a year of guidance and support from her mentor didi and workshops from USF this year she has secured AIR 3786. 

 

Efforts put it – Right after her class 12th she has given her first attempt but could not clear it due to a lack of preparation, but then she decided to take a gap year and during this time she has given most of her time in studies with support and guidance of her mentor didi. The workshops organized by USF also helped her to stay motivated and manage her timetable.

 

Current state/Outcome – She has cleared her NEET exam and secured AIR 3786 and scored 665 marks. Now she is waiting for counseling and then will take admissions.
