Thanks to everyone who supported us to make the 21st century skills summer camp a success. The camp was aimed at training children from public schools using 21st century skills such as critical thinking, creativity, communication and collaboration to cope with present day challenges beyond thier class rooms. The activities ran for 5 days at Kathryn .M. Dick Memorial youth Center,Eiyenkorin, kwara state. Sessions on Digital literacy, finacial literacy, health literacy, child rights, citizenship and life skills were taught using games such as scrabble, chess,Ludo,Monopoly and Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Boardgames.
The 21st century skills summer camp was a golden oppourtunity for many of the kids and volunteers in the camp.We had 43 children and 19 volunteers who assisted us in the camp. One of our volunteers,Ayobami reported that while assessing the kids in his own group,he noticed that most of them have never seen or touched a computer before. He immediately introduced them to micro soft word and noticed the eagerness with which all of them wanted to type out thier names and other sentences on the computer. After allowing them to take turns to type out thier names, they were so happy and asked him if he will be in camp again next year. They all said, they have learnt ICT.
Adeniyi,a 13 year old boy who watches men beside his daddy's phography shop playing chess all the time but never for once had the oppurtunity to play was so excited being at the camp.He said i have learnt how to play chess and i won a chess game too.I am now a chess player.I also learnt that as a child,i have rights too.
Kanyinsola,a 12 year old girl said she learnt scrabble and ICT.Scrabble is a very good game that helps my vocabulary and adds to my word bank.
Many of our volunteers who are undergraduates from the University of Ilorin also learnt a lot aboutchild protection, public speaking and team building.
At the end of the camp, the children were so happy as they had the oppurtunity to interact with our guest speakers Mrs Ife Adeleke, a lifeskills teacher from Twhane University of Technology,South Africa about Goal setting and Dr.Gbemi Adeniran from Federal Medical Center,Kebbi state on Time Ma nagement.
Thank you to everyone who made this possible,we appreciate you. Thanks to Globalgiving for giving us this oppurtunity and many thanks to voluntary service Overseas(VSO)Nigeria.
