This program is aimed at providing after-school academic tutoring to 15 hard-of-hearing students who attend ordinary school at the age of 7-15 years old . Special education teachers teach them Mandarin Chinese and Mathematics with methods like writing, Q&A, and practice with repetitions that help and enhance hard-of hearing students' understanding. There will be a social worker who is responsible for case management , and will teach them social skill and emotional behavior management.
Hard-of- hearing students' listening restriction usually impact on their study in the class of integration education, and most of the teachers don't understand special education. Hence, those students' achievement is always inferior to the hearing classmates . They are lack of self-confidence and full of frustration easily.They aren't good at interpersonal social skills , and communicate difficultly with their hearing classmates. They often feel left of the classmates.
Teachers can care each student about their learning situation and give guidance or assistance timely. Students can learn slowly in a reassuring environment and feel less learning stress or frustration.Teachers may simplify , analyze or transform the teaching material, and make learning sheets for them to practice. It will enhance students' interest, understanding and sense of accomplishment in course.Social workers will teach individual students how to communicate with others appropriately.
Those hard-of-hearing students will motivate their interest in learning and their confidence. When reducing learning stress and they can get better achievement , they will keep up the development of knowledge with the hearing peers. We think it will be helpful for their positive development of self identity.Those hard-of-hearing students learn about positive social skills and methods of communication and emotional management ,and their peers will be glad to encourage and support them.
