Henry was abandoned by his mother and left under the care of his grandmother. This resulted in him dropping out of school because his grandmother was not in a position to support his education. Through our social workers, Henry’s case was identified and he was admitted into our Fountains of Hope School. Being out of school for three years, and as a teenager, we felt that with the change of the national education curriculum, returning him to grade 4, where he dropped off, would do more harm than good. Henry was therefore admitted into a higher grade and enrolled into the accelerated learning programme(ALP) within the school. The ALP programme is used to improve the literacy and numeracy skills of children who are farthest behind. This consequently contributes to improved learning outcomes of learners. A teacher was also assigned to Henry to support him to catch up with his peers academically and socially. His grandmother was also engaged to support Henry as much as possible at home. This year, Henry will be completing his primary education.
Without interventions like ALP, helping children who are behind to catch up with learning would be challenging. We are grateful to be part of the movement that acknowledges that many children in the world are out of school and they need all the help they can get to complete their primary education.
This year, our efforts will be focussed on teacher training and development. Basically in areas of school management, early childhood development, individualized teaching, psychosocial support and student leadership to ensure improved quality of education in our school and meaningful support for the learners.
We are asking for your continued prayers and support as we carry on with empowering the children in Kibera through education. In the words of Koffi Annan, we believe that, “Knowledge is power. Information is liberating. Education is the premise of progress, in every society, in every family.”
