Transforming Lives Through Education...

Socio-economic challenges within Kibera’s informal settlement have had a ripple effect on the uptake of education among children living in the settlement. This is highly influenced by unemployment and poverty. At The Turning Point Trust, our mission has been to ensure that every child gets access to quality basic education as enshrined in the Constitution of Kenya (2010).

We acknowledge that parents and guardians struggle to make ends meet in this community. For instance, through the help of our social workers, we enrolled Diana, a girl that had been abandoned by her single mother at the age of eleven, since she could not meet their basic needs. Diana and her four siblings were left under the care of her grandmother, who didn’t have a reliable income avenue.

Diana has proven to be a hard-working girl and through our education programme, she has caught up with her classmates and is working to perform well in her academics. Before Diana joined the football club, she was very reserved and couldn’t express herself well. After joining the team, she grew out of her cocoon and learnt to enjoy the company of her peers as they engaged in the sport. With the help of the football coach, she has developed an assertive attitude towards life and now aspires to be a good role model to her siblings.

The story of Diana represents over 150 children who would have been different if it was not for the constant support from friends of Turning Point.

With the onset of a new education system in Kenya, primary education ends at grade 6 instead of the usual grade 8. As a result, our school will have more room to enroll more students come January, 2023. In this regard, we invite you to continue giving and praying with us as we work to ensure that as many children as possible have access to quality education.
