When Nine Trees Fell, 61 Lives Were at Risk

It was a normal day at Santokba Hospital Campus in Dholka. The hospital was preparing to expand some of its departments, and for the development work, around nine trees needed to be cut down.

But no one realized that these trees were more than just trees. High among their branches were the homes of many birds. Egrets, cormorants, and night herons had built their nests there. Adult birds were raising their young, and many baby birds were still too small to fly or protect themselves. When the trees were cut, their entire world came crashing down. Nests fell to the ground, leaving many young birds injured, frightened, and helpless. Some were badly hurt from the fall, while others became vulnerable to attacks by stary dogs. Within a very short time, a peaceful nesting place had turned into a place of fear and struggle.

Jivdaya Charitable Trust was informed about the situation, and our rescue team immediately reached the location. A total of 61 birds were rescued. Sadly, around 10 of them had suffered very serious injuries and could not survive despite every effort to save them. But for the remaining 51 birds, there was still hope. They were brought under JCT’s care and received timely medical treatment, proper food, safe shelter, and continuous attention. Our doctors and caregivers closely monitored them and helped them regain their strength day by day.

Slowly, the injured birds began to heal. The weak became stronger. The young birds grew healthier and learned to survive on their own. And finally came the moment our team had been hoping for. After complete recovery and rehabilitation, all 51 surviving birds were released back into their natural habitat, where they could once again spread their wings and return to the life they belonged to.

There is a sad irony in this story. A hospital that works every day to save countless human lives unknowingly became the reason these birds lost their homes and suffered. But this incident also reminds us how closely our lives are connected with nature. A tree may look ordinary to us, but for another living being, it can be a home, a nursery, and an entire world.

Jivdaya Charitable Trust is grateful that we could step in at the right time and play an important role in saving and restoring these precious lives. For us, the most beautiful ending was watching 51 birds spread their wings again and return to the sky where they belong.
