TransRights Pakistan: Empower & Include

By Mehmood Rind Baloch | Program Manager

Introduction
The “TransRights Pakistan: Empower & Include” project is a groundbreaking initiative aimed at addressing the systemic challenges faced by transgender individuals in Pakistan. This project is hosted on the GlobalGiving online fundraising platform with a goal to raise $90,000. Despite the lack of funds raised so far, our determination to bring positive change remains unwavering. The project focuses on advocating for transgender rights, providing essential legal and healthcare support, creating economic opportunities, and fostering social inclusion to combat discrimination and marginalization.

Project Objectives

  1. Advocacy and Awareness: Promote awareness about transgender rights and advocate for legal reforms to ensure their protection.
  2. Healthcare Access: Provide transgender individuals with access to quality healthcare services, including gender-affirming care.
  3. Economic Empowerment: Facilitate skill development programs and employment opportunities to reduce reliance on begging or sex work.
  4. Social Inclusion: Combat societal stigma by fostering acceptance through community engagement and education programs.

Challenge
Transgender individuals in Pakistan face significant obstacles that undermine their dignity and quality of life:

  1. Discrimination and Violence:
    • High rates of violence and harassment due to pervasive societal stigma.
  2. Economic Marginalization:
    • Approximately 90% of transgender individuals are forced into begging or sex work due to lack of education and employment opportunities.
  3. Healthcare Exclusion:
    • Systemic barriers prevent access to essential healthcare, exacerbating their vulnerability.
  4. Legal Barriers:
    • Limited legal protections leave transgender individuals exposed to exploitation and abuse.

This cycle of poverty and exclusion perpetuates due to deep-seated societal prejudices and inadequate institutional support.

Current Status

  • Fundraising Progress:

    • The project is in its initial stages, with no funds raised so far on GlobalGiving.
    • The absence of funds highlights the urgent need for enhanced visibility and donor engagement.
  • Preparatory Work:

    • Outreach efforts have begun to build partnerships with local organizations and stakeholders.
    • Detailed plans for program implementation are in place, awaiting financial support to commence activities.

Planned Interventions

  1. Legal Support:

    • Offer pro bono legal assistance to transgender individuals facing discrimination or abuse.
    • Advocate for policy changes to strengthen legal protections.
  2. Healthcare Services:

    • Establish partnerships with clinics and hospitals to provide affordable, inclusive healthcare.
    • Organize health camps focused on transgender-specific needs.
  3. Economic Opportunities:

    • Conduct skill development workshops tailored to market demands.
    • Facilitate job placements through collaboration with inclusive employers.
  4. Awareness Campaigns:

    • Host seminars, workshops, and media campaigns to educate the public and reduce stigma.
    • Engage community leaders to foster acceptance and support for transgender individuals.
