A van is needed to reach those in need of urgent medical help, deliver food to the poor and get our students to school when the rain is coming down in buckets. Those with urgent medical needs who live outside of town often requires Olalo renting a vehicle to get them to the hospital and returned home. In most cases, the rental cost far surpasses the cost of the entire medical expense! Eliminating rental expenses means more resources saved to help others with needs not fees.
When you live on less than $1 a day, you don't own a vehicle. Wherever you go, you walk. But there are times when people are too ill, too injured, too far from town to walk for help. They may need food and other basics just to survive. Our sponsored students, most of whom walk 50 minutes to school each morning sit in drenched clothing for hours until they dry. The sick, the poor, the hungry...all impacted in some fashion by not having access to transportation. A van provides a solution.
An Olalo van can transport the poor to urgent medical care locally or to the next town when needed, saving $50 each time by not renting a car. Eliminating these rentals keeps more funds in Olalo's medical and education programs to help more people. Our volunteers can purchase and deliver food to those in need and get students to school safely & dry. To offset the cost of running the van, locals traveling the area can pay a fee to ride along. It's a win/win for the people of Oyugis.
Long term, the health and well being of the poor in Oyugis will be impacted by the ability to access medical care, receive food and life basics. Students benefit more from their education by focusing on their studies rather than their wet clothing for hours. Often called on for medical help by people living an hour or more outside of town, a vehicle will allow Olalo to immediately get to those in need of help, saving lives & using more of our resources to help others in need.
