Medical attention for rheumatic patients
By Giovanna | Project leader
![]()
The last couple of months, 68 patients have received free medical treatment at the Unidad para el Paciente Reumatico (our treatment unit). The cost of this medication for Fundacion Maritere is $10,000 USD. The medical treatment, along with nutritional and psychological attention and physyotherapy, has important positive outcomes for patients. Karla, one of our patients, suffers from rheumatoid arthritis, an autoinmune disease. This means that the inmune system (which usually fights infection) attacks the cells that line the joints by mistake, making the joints swollen, stiff and painful. Over time, this can damage the joints, cartilage and nearby bone. However, she has been constant in her treatment and the disease is under control. She receives monthly medication and is improving both physically and emotionally. To this day, she has been able to recover her daily routine and get back to work uninterruptedly. Her quality of life has improved definitely, thanks to our donors and the team at the Unidad para el Paciente Reumatico.

Medical attention for rheumatic patients
By Giovanna Morales | Project leader
Throughout these months, Fundacion Maritere has made an effort to give constant medical attention to all our patients. It is particularly difficult in these challenging times. However, most of our patients are truly committed with their treatment. We have two doctors specialists in rheumatic diseases, in charge of the medical advance of our patients. Each week, they receive in our center between 15-20 patients who also receive free medication. Stefany is one of these patients. She is 35 years old and suffers a rheumatic disease called "Lupus Eritematoso Sistémico". She is currently receiving an integral attention in our specialized center. She is receiving medical follow up, physiotherapy, psychological support and free medication. She has reported through our evaluation tools, that pain has reduced considerably; her joints are no longer sore nor swollen and she is responding positively to her medical treatment.
