Fundacion Maritere opened a clinic based on an integral attention model for low income rheumatic patients in the state of Puebla, Mexico. This clinic provides medicine, physiotherapy, psychological, medical and nutritional intervention, as well as training for self-employment all in a single space. The mission of the project is to avoid disability and improve the lives of more than 100 patients and their families, through movement recovery, emotional and physical improvement, and employment.
In the state of Puebla, more than 10% of the population suffers from a rheumatic disease. There are around 59,400 poor patients and 14,700 in extreme poverty. Most do not have access to a social security system or lack enough resources to cover their treatment expenses. Because of their high risk of disability, these diseases cause important problems for individuals, their families and the society overall, with high direct and indirect economic costs related to depression and unemployment.
Because of the many areas that are compromised in the life of a rheumatic patient, the treatment must be holistic. Nonetheless there are few spaces that offer the services altogether (medical, psychological, nutritional, rehabilitation and training for self employment). Our integral care model is unique in the state of Puebla and through it, we will be strengthening poor rheumatic patients in all mentioned areas in order to avoid disability and death and regain a productive life.
The project will attend 100 patients and their families. First of all, patients and families will receive psychological support and a community network upon which they can rely. The physical aspect will be addressed through physiotherapy, nutrition and a rheumatic specialist. In addition, patients will have access to self employment training in order to rebuild and regain their productive life. We hope that in the medium and long term all of these will have an impact on a better quality of life.
