Transformative Education for Refugees in Zimbabwe

A TWEENS founder who is now studying in the United States won a Davis Projects for Peace grant in order to bring digital literacy to the youth at TWEENS. Together with our funding from GlobalGiving donations, we have been able to bring computer training and literacy to TWEENS.  We now have solar-powered wifi at our youth center. The resulting digital skills and peace-building program has been designed for 25 refugee youths in Tongogara Refugee Settlement. This initiative aims to equip participants with essential skills in computer literacy, digital tools, coding fundamentals, digital marketing, and mentorship for post-secondary pathways.

From July 2 to July 4, we made the following purchases to support the program: 1 printer, 10 computers, Books and pens as well as refreshments for the trainings.  We successfully enrolled 25 youths in the program. 

A refugee student at Africa University who is expected to graduate next year, has been recruited to teach the computer program. With his background in computers and experience in his university courses, he is well-equipped to guide the students.  Lessons commenced on the 13th of July and are scheduled daily in the afternoons,

The program was introduced to help recent A-Level high school graduates who face challenges when they enter college or work due to a lack of basic computer skills. We aim to assist these students in finding online jobs, navigating applications, and building their foundational computer skills.

Prince, one of our alumni, successfully applied for the grant through Pomona College and facilitated its implementation on the ground. TWEENS members are passionate about supporting our community, and we are grateful for the grant as it addresses critical education and employment issues.
