Education Matters is a non-profit educational access organization in Zimbabwe that matches talent with opportunity. Together We Can Educationally Empower Non-privileged Students (TWEENS) is a program supported by Education Matters that specifically targets refugee youth in Tongogara Refugee Camp. TWEENS is a refugee led youth center with peer tutoring and an A level program that was started in 2020 dedicated to empowering refugee youth through education and mentorship.
Educational opportunities are severely limited for Tongogara's 17,000+ refugees, primarily from DRC, Burundi, and Rwanda. The camp only provides schooling up to O Level (10th grade) due to the lack of A Level classrooms. Consequently, bright and motivated students have no access to high schools within walking distance to complete their education. This lack of A Level (11th & 12th grade) options effectively cuts off traditional pathways to university for these young refugees.
TWEENS, a remarkable program created by refugees for refugees, offers free tutoring services and after-school activities. The program fundraiser will improve the educational facilities and expand the TWEENS Ordinary level tutoring services and offer Advanced level program as well as empowerment workshops and extracurricular offerings at the Tongogara Refugee Camp motivating young people to stay in school and abstain from social ills such as drug abuse and early marriages.
This project will provide young refugees with limited educational options, access to high-quality education. Educating motivated young individuals can profoundly impact their lives, immediate families, and the broader refugee communities they come from. Our refugee alumni have excelled at university and have given back through social impact projects and advocacy on refugee issues, extending their positive influence far beyond their immediate surroundings.
