We're moving...slowly, but surely!

April 30: 8 new pens have been placed
April 30: 8 new pens have been placed

Last time I wrote, I entitled the email message, "It's time to move." A lot has happened since that January 9 message. First, Kampala City Council Authority hasn't extended the eviction notice, but they also haven't acted upon it. Even though the USPCA put in a request for an extension, KCCA has given no formal response.

Informally, USPCA and KCCA talk to each other (and the USPCA responds to KCCA's concerns about rabies by holding rabies vaccination clinics in target communities). So for now, the dogs and cats are safe at the current Haven and we are confident that KCCA won't require the USPCA to shut down operations without giving an adequate notice and ensuring the cats and dogs can safely get moved away.

But that doesn't mean we're standing still. --And this is where a lot has been happening:

  • A temporary fence and gate has been placed around some of the property-where the construction is now taking place.
  • A pit latrine was dug for construction workers, a container was placed on-site for supplies, and a foreman and workers were hired.
  • Concrete slabs were laid for 8 new pens and walls built around the slabs (this should be less stressful and quieter, the dogs won't see other dogs on all sides).
  • Eight new pens were fabricated and placed at the new site.
  • Concrete slabs were laid for 4 more pens plus a couple of puppy pens.
  • The kitchen slab was laid.

I visited the new site during April and watched as the new construction materialized. Also, I had carried money raised from this GlobalGiving project to Uganda to cover construction expenses. Other than the 8 new pens, the full cost of the construction to-date is from our AKI donors! (And even some of the money to pay for the 8 new pens comes from AKI supporters since the grant the USPCA received didn't cover the entire cost.) All of this is because of you!

We're still at least a few months away from being able to move the dogs (dogs go 1st since they are more of a problem at the current site than are the very quiet kitties):

  • We want the workmen to have completed this phase so that the dogs aren't stressed by all the work going on.
  • We need shade cloth to cover the pens (we've found some at reasonable price, blocks the sun and protects from rain).
  • We need 2 staff people on-site, but that requires an office/reception, including facilities for them.
  • We need a kitchen-a basic one, to cook cat and dog food and refigeration for the food.
  • We need to get the water hooked up, power hooked up, and for all of this, we need Kajjansi Town Council approval.

And again-we are not standing still, we have been working on all of the above.

As always, we will keep you informed about the USPCA's progress, and as always, we are so grateful for your support. To complete the move and the 1st phase of construction, we will need to continue to raise money, so we are grateful if you can help us get the word out about the great work of the USPCA and the great need to build the new Haven. Thank you!
