Now that AKI raised the money and our Partner Organization, the Uganda Society for the Protection & Care of Animals, purchased land to create a new, state-of-the-art-sanctuary-education facility, the USPCA has started building the needed facilities. Several kennels have been built and moved from the old shelter to the new, a kitchen has been built, a fence was built around the property. So much more needs to be done before all ~350 cats and dogs can be moved to the new, beautiful site!
Yes, Animal-Kind International's Partner Organization, USPCA, needs more space to rescue & rehab more dogs & cats--the Haven is often above the 120 dog/cat capacity. But our vision is so much more: a facility where dogs & cats have freedom to exercise & play, potential adopters can comfortably visit with dogs & cats, where Ugandan kids can learn about animals, animal shelter staff throughout Africa can learn shelter management, animal care & handling, & where volunteers can be accommodated.
USPCA will move all animals & equipment from the old crowded site to the new plot. New pens will be spacious & escape-proof. USPCA's Haven is located on a small, rented plot with no space for animals to play, for people to visit quietly or play with animals, & the current location isn't amenable to good animal care, learning, & volunteering. Now that the USPCA owns the new plot, they will no longer have to pay rent once they can move out of the old location & they can take care of more animals.
The Haven will be able to rescue & rehab more dogs & cats-a new facility should hold > 350 animals. In a country where animal adoption is just becoming known, The Haven will be prepared to meet the demand for adoptable animals. If an animal is in need of rescue, there's no place to go but The Haven, & with this new facility, no dog or cat will be turned away. The transformed Haven will have space for volunteers & will be an attractive place for kids & others to learn about kindness to animals.
