Beyond sponsoring children’s education, Joy for Children Uganda runs career guidance sessions to help children decide on their career paths early. This is so because we believe children who know what they want to become tend to stay more focused and put more energy into school. On Friday, October 23, 2026, we held two sessions in Bwaise, Kampala: one at Ebenezer Nursery and Primary School and one in the Bwaise slum community.

Who We Reached

  1. Sessions held: 2 (one in a school, one in the community).
  2. Children engaged in the Bwaise slum session: 15.
  3. 32 children were engaged in the session at Ebenezer Nursery and Primary School.
  4. 47 children aged 7-14 years were reached in total.

The sessions were by far refreshing to the young attendees; for example,

“When I asked the children in the Bwaise slum session what they wanted to become, many hesitated at first. Some had never been asked that question. By the end of the session, they were naming careers confidently, such as “I want to become a teacher, doctor, engineer, pilot, and explaining why. Seeing their confidence grow in just one afternoon reminded me why this work matters.” Children need to be guided early to set their careers, encouraged, and supported to pursue their future careers.

One of the children, J aged 11 from Ebenezer Nursery and Primary school quoted “Before this session, I did not know what I wanted to be. Now I want to become a doctor, and I will work hard in school to get there.”

Your donations helped us to deliver the following sessions.

  1. Facilitator transport and logistics $15
  2. Learning materials (notebooks, pens, career charts): $45
  3. Refreshments for children $20
  4. Mobilisation                      $20

Total spent:$100

Many children in informal settlements in Uganda like Bwaise lack exposure to different professions, so they need continued guidance and role models. Time was also limited, and children wanted to keep asking questions.

Our next steps are to;

  1. We will conduct follow-up career sessions at Ebenezer Nursery and Primary School and in the Bwaise community.
  2. We will invite professionals from the community to speak to the children as role models.
  3. We will check in with the children over the coming months to see how they are progressing and staying focused in school.
  4. We are planning on extending the sessions to more schools and communities as funding allows.

Thank you to our donors for making these sessions possible. Your support is helping children in Bwaise dream bigger and stay committed to their education. We will keep you updated on our progress.
